Since the launch of Overwatch a few days ago you can't go anywhere on social media without finding some form of tips and tricks. Or some form of top list covering the game. Don't get me wrong. I am all for these things. I also am all for getting to know where the health packs are on the maps.
Yet, there seems to be one topic that really isn't being covered much. When it comes to Overwatch. That topic is working as a team. This game is based on working together with 5 other people towards a specific goal. We as the players are controlling characters in a team of six people. These characters aren't picked at random. They are the cream of the crop.
Some players are amazing with characters like Bastion, others are god-like with Genji. Yet this isn't about the single players who are getting 27 to 30 eliminations by them selves.(or in total) This game is about being an Overwatch Unit. An elite team of ex-Overwatch agents. (Possibly still agents depending on wtf is going on in the freaking story??????? I am looking at you Blizzard)
Over the past few days of playing the game with my wife, I have noticed that it is harder to get a group of 6 to run as a unit. Yes there are ways to communicate with the team and try to but it seems that everyone is just running around doing their own thing...( Now mind you the whole offensive class is supposed to kinda do that.)
Then again, there is also the issue of running away from the Support characters. Which I have seen way to many times. I have also died enough times to prove it. ( I could be playing them wrong, but support characters do just that. They support the other characters and keep them going.
This isn't to say I haven't ever played a game like this before. This may be my wife's first first-person shooter. It isn't mine. I have played tons of games and never found them to be quite like this one. You can compare it to TF2 all you like but I can't it is similar, but I digress
Overwatch is not just a run of the mill FPS. It is a team based, fun, and challenging game. It is easy top pick up but challenging to master. Which is what keeps me coming back.
The reason I put team based first is because in this game you live and die by your team. The characters chosen by other players on your team will usually dictate how long you and your team will survive.
A team with no tank or healer is usually going to get stomped on. You wont necessarily loose or win based on a single good player. The team is what dictates if you win.
I think that this is the topic everyone should be talking about. We need to try and be an Overwatch Unit/ Team. Not an Overwatch character.
